Week 6 -

 Disk Defragmentation

Disk defragmentation is a process that reorganizes fragmented files on a hard drive. When you save files to your computer, they are typically stored in contiguous blocks of space. However, as you delete and create files, these blocks can become scattered across the disk, leading to fragmentation. Fragmented files take longer to access, as the hard drive head must jump around to read the different pieces.

Defragmentation moves these scattered pieces back together, improving file access times and potentially increasing overall system performance. While less critical with modern solid-state drives, defragmentation can still be beneficial for traditional hard drives, especially those with a significant amount of file activity.
